Who Is Behind Phu Quoc Rentals?
Phu Quoc Rentals was founded in 2018 by Alex Nguyen, a Phu Quoc Island resident since 2013. Alex arrived as a backpacker, stayed for the beaches, and never left — building a network of trusted property owners across Long Beach, Ong Lang, and Duong Dong over more than a decade of island living. The business started with three bungalows and a WhatsApp number. In 2026 it coordinates bookings for over 40 properties across all four accommodation types.
The team currently has four people: Alex (founder, Vietnamese and English), Marina (Russian-speaking guest manager, joined 2020), Ji-ho (Korean-speaking coordinator, joined 2023), and Linh (Vietnamese operations, joined 2021). Together the team responds on WhatsApp in four languages — English, Russian, Vietnamese, and Korean — seven days a week from 7am to 11pm Vietnam time.
The core principle has never changed: travellers should pay the property rate, not the property rate plus 15–20% OTA commission. Every property in the Phu Quoc Rentals portfolio is personally inspected by the team. We know the WiFi speed, the beach distance, the nearest good pho shop, and which bungalow has the best sunrise view. Algorithms don't know these things. We do.
What Is the Direct-Booking Ethos?
Online travel agencies changed how people book holidays — and for a time, that was genuinely useful. But by 2026 the model has become extractive. Booking.com, Airbnb, and Agoda charge property owners 15–20% commission on every booking. Property owners who want to stay visible on these platforms have to raise their prices to absorb that cost — meaning guests pay more, not less, for the convenience of using a big name platform.

Ji-ho joined the team in 2023 specifically to serve the growing Korean visitor base — the largest single international market on Phu Quoc by bookings. Korean travellers often book in groups of 4–8, prefer pool villas, and appreciate precise, formal communication. Ji-ho responds in natural Korean with appropriate honorific register.
What Local Knowledge Does the Team Have?
Phu Quoc is a 589 km² island in the Gulf of Thailand — Vietnam's largest. It received 6.5 million visitors in 2025, up 66% year-on-year, making it one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing destinations. The island has changed dramatically since 2013: the international airport opened in 2012, a new highway connected north and south in 2018, the world's longest over-sea cable car (7.9 km to An Thoi) opened in 2018, and Vingroup's VinWonders resort transformed the northern end of the island in 2020.
The team has lived through all of this. We know which Long Beach plots were flood-prone before the 2019 drainage works, which Ong Lang properties genuinely have bioluminescent plankton visible from their terrace in the dry season, and which Duong Dong apartment blocks have the most reliable electricity supply. We know the difference between a "5-minute walk to the beach" in a listing description and an actual 5-minute walk to the beach.
