What Types of Accommodation Does Duong Dong Have?

The honest answer: fewer options than Long Beach, but more variety in the budget and mid-range categories than most visitors expect.

Guesthouses and budget hotels are the most common category. These are typically family-run properties with 8–20 rooms, air conditioning, WiFi, and daily cleaning. Quality varies — some are genuinely good value at $14–18/night; others at the same price have aged mattresses and slow internet. The ones near the night market on Vo Thi Sau Street tend to be noisier in the evening; the quieter options are a few blocks back toward the river or on the north side of town.

Mid-range hotels (around $40–80/night) exist but they're not the town's strong suit. Most guests spending that much prefer to be on Long Beach where they get actual beach access for a similar price. The mid-range hotels in Duong Dong mostly serve business travellers and people who want the town's convenience without slumming it. Fine, but not exciting.

Apartments are where Duong Dong really makes sense. Monthly furnished studios run $380–550 USD; one-bedrooms are $450–700 USD. These are proper apartments — separate kitchen, real living space, often a balcony — not a hotel room with a hot plate. The internet in the apartment buildings we manage runs 50–100 Mbps, which is why digital nomads and the Russian-speaking "zimovka" crowd (people who winter here for 2–3 months) end up in Duong Dong rather than on Long Beach. What you won't find in Duong Dong: beachfront bungalows, private-pool villas, or resort facilities. Those are on Long Beach, Ong Lang, and to a lesser extent Bai Sao. If a garden bungalow with a pool 50 metres from the water is what you're after, this isn't your area.

Who Should Actually Stay in Duong Dong?

The question I get asked more than any other about Duong Dong is some version of "but is it worth it if there's no beach?" The answer depends entirely on what kind of trip you're taking.

Budget travellers on short trips: Duong Dong has the island's cheapest decent accommodation. A clean double room with AC, WiFi, and hot water for $12–16/night is genuinely available here; you won't find that price on Long Beach. If you're spending most of your day out on tours, renting a motorbike, or eating at local places, the location makes complete sense.

Long-stay renters and digital nomads: Monthly rates drop the per-night cost dramatically. A $420/month furnished studio works out to $14/night — and you get a kitchen, a real workspace, and neighbours who aren't just passing through. Vietnam's 90-day e-visa (valid since August 2023, costs $25 USD, applied at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) has made 2–3 month stays far more common than they used to be. Duong Dong is where most of those longer-term residents end up.

Families with young children or anyone with health considerations: The hospital proximity is real. Not every trip goes perfectly, and being 10 minutes closer to the main hospital when someone spikes a fever at 2 AM is not a small thing.

Who shouldn't stay in Duong Dong: anyone whose primary plan is beach time. If you want to wake up, step outside, and be on the sand in under two minutes, stay on Long Beach. The 5-minute motorbike ride to the water sounds trivial until it becomes a twice-daily routine on a hot week.

What Should You Know Before Booking Accommodation in Duong Dong?

A few things that matter in practice and don't always show up in the listings:

Street noise on Vo Thi Sau and Tran Hung Dao: Both main streets in the town centre are active until at least 11 PM. Guesthouses right on those roads are convenient but not quiet. If light sleeper is a word that applies to you, look one block back. The streets parallel to the main drag — Nguyen Du, 30 Thang 4 — are much calmer.

Internet quality varies by building, not by area: Duong Dong generally has good fibre infrastructure, but individual buildings have patchy setups. If you're working remotely, ask the property for a speed test result or check a recent review specifically mentioning internet speed. We've seen apartments in the same block with 80 Mbps on one floor and 12 Mbps on another.

Getting around without a motorbike: Grab works well in Duong Dong — short town rides cost 20,000–40,000 VND, and most drivers respond within 5 minutes. Mai Linh metered taxis also operate here. But for a week-long stay, renting a motorbike (100,000–150,000 VND/day from shops on the main road) gives you much more flexibility for beach trips, market runs, and day trips around the island.

Direct booking saves money: OTA platforms are useful for comparing options, but the rates you see include the platform commission. Booking.com typically charges independent properties 15–25%, and Airbnb charges hosts around 15% in 2025–2026. Those costs are baked into the price.
