Phu Quoc International Airport (IATA: PQC) sits in the southeast of the island. That single fact changes how you should think about accommodation strategy. The beaches and towns where most visitors stay — Long Beach, Duong Dong, Ong Lang — are all on the northwest coast, 9–10 km away by road. The airport is not near the main tourist strip. It's near the quieter, less developed southeastern part of the island.
I mention this because I get the same question at least a dozen times a month: "Where should I stay to be close to the airport?" Most of the time, what the person actually wants is a short transfer on arrival day, not a property within sight of the runways. Those are different problems with different solutions.
The road from the terminal goes northwest toward Duong Dong — and that road passes through or near most of the island's mid-range and budget accommodation within the first 10 km. So in a sense, almost everything on Phu Quoc is reasonably close to the airport by island standards. The inconvenient truth is that "near the airport" and "near the beach" point in different directions.
What Accommodation Is Actually Close to PQC Terminal?
Within 2–3 km of the terminal there are maybe 15–20 small guesthouses and budget hotels, clustered along the main road heading northwest. These are transit properties — purpose-built or adapted for overnight layover guests. Rooms run roughly $25–55/night. Clean, functional, AC, basic breakfast options in some. None of them have beach access; the nearest coastline from this zone is either Bai Sao (12–14 km south by road) or the eastern coast, which has no developed beach at all.
Restaurant choice near the airport is thin. There are a few local pho and rice shops, a petrol station with a small convenience corner, and that's roughly it within easy walking distance. You will need a motorbike or car to get to anything resembling a proper meal or a supermarket. The nearest VinMart is in Duong Dong, about 10 km up the road.
One upside: these guesthouses are quiet. No bar noise, no traffic after 9 PM. If you land at 11 PM and leave at 6 AM, it's a perfectly acceptable stopping point. I'd just be direct: if your stay is longer than one night, you are almost certainly happier somewhere else.
How Long Is the Transfer From the Airport to Each Area?

Is Bai Sao the Best Beach for Airport Arrivals?
Geographically, yes — Bai Sao is the nearest developed beach to PQC, about 12–14 km south by road. The beach itself is good: fine white sand, calmer water than the west coast during the dry season, and far fewer visitors than Long Beach. There's a genuine argument for basing yourself at Bai Sao if you want a quieter trip and don't mind limited infrastructure.
The catch is the accommodation range. A handful of small resorts and guesthouses operate in the area, mostly $40–90/night. There is no large supermarket within easy reach. Restaurant options beyond the beachside shacks close early. If you want to explore the rest of the island — the night market in Duong Dong, Ong Lang, the An Thoi boat tours — you are looking at 30–45 minutes each way by motorbike or car from Bai Sao.
My honest take: one or two nights at Bai Sao on your way in or out is a nice move. It softens the airport-to-beach transition and the morning light on that beach is excellent. Does It Make Sense to Stay Near the Airport for an Early Flight?
This is the main reason people ask about airport accommodation, so I'll be direct. If your flight departs at 7:00 AM or later, staying near the airport gives you almost no practical advantage over staying on Long Beach or in Duong Dong. Leaving your accommodation at 5:30 AM for a 15–20 minute Grab to the airport puts you at the terminal by 5:50 AM — and Grab is available at that hour, though wait times can be 10–15 minutes longer than during the day.
The calculation changes for departures before 6:30 AM. At that point, a Grab from Long Beach needs to arrive at your door around 4:45–5:00 AM, which is genuinely thin on driver availability. A pre-arranged driver costs more but removes the uncertainty. Staying 3 km from the airport and leaving at 5:40 AM is cleaner.
A third option that most guests don't consider: book a pre-arranged airport transfer the night before. We use a driver named Minh who does early-morning pickups — he has never once been late in the three years I've been recommending him, and he charges a flat 200,000 VND from anywhere on the Long Beach strip. The reason I mention Minh is that the "stay near the airport" decision is often driven by anxiety about logistics rather than actual time savings. Once you have a confirmed 5 AM pickup from a known driver, the extra 15 minutes of road is irrelevant.
Who Actually Benefits From Staying in the Airport Zone?
There are real cases where it makes sense.
Very late arrivals, very early departures. If you land after midnight and leave before 6 AM, a transit guesthouse near PQC is genuinely practical. You get a clean room, a short transfer each way, and no stress. These properties know their market — check-in is usually 24 hours, and late-night pickups from the terminal are common.
Missed connections or flight delays. If your onward flight has been pushed, airlines sometimes arrange accommodation near the airport. You don't get a choice; the guesthouses nearby handle this reasonably well.
Short connection stopovers. Some travellers use Phu Quoc as a transit stop between mainland Vietnam and Cambodian coastal destinations. A day and night near PQC — enough time to see Bai Sao on a rented motorbike — is a reasonable approach if the logistics force it.
That's roughly it. For a 5-night beach holiday, a 2-week stay, a family trip, or anything resembling a proper Phu Quoc visit, staying near the airport trades away all the reasons people come to the island in exchange for 10 minutes of transfer time you will stop thinking about after day one.
