Why Bai Sao Is the Most Beautiful Beach on Phu Quoc
Bai Sao sits on Phu Quoc's southern coast, a 3 km crescent of sand tucked between low forested hills near the small port town of An Thoi. Where Long Beach is the island's main artery — busy, commercial, and lined with bars — Bai Sao is something else entirely: calm, unhurried, and visually striking in a way that makes every visitor reach for a camera within minutes of arrival.
The sand here is finer and whiter than anywhere else on the island — a soft talcum-powder texture that stays cool underfoot even in the midday heat. The water transitions from pale turquoise at the shoreline through a series of greens and blues depending on the light, and it is typically clear enough to see the bottom at 3–4 metres in the dry season. There are no strong currents at Bai Sao, no significant surf, and the gently shelving seabed makes it the safest and most enjoyable swimming beach in Phu Quoc.
The beach faces east-southeast, which has an important practical consequence: it is sheltered from the southwest monsoon that churns up Long Beach from May to October. While the western beaches can get choppy during rainy season afternoons, Bai Sao stays calm. You can swim here comfortably year-round — one of very few beaches on the island where that is consistently true.
The trade-off is distance. Bai Sao is roughly 25–30 minutes from Duong Dong by motorbike or taxi, and approximately 30–35 minutes from Phu Quoc International Airport. The road south through the island's interior is smooth and well-maintained, passing through secondary jungle and a few small villages. Most guests find the commute more than worth it. Those who stay near Bai Sao for 4–7 nights consistently report it as the highlight of their Phu Quoc trip.
Beach Clubs, Seafood & the Bai Sao Atmosphere
Unlike the developed northern strip of Long Beach, Bai Sao's beachfront remains relatively low-key. A handful of open-air beach clubs and seafood restaurants line the northern end of the beach, serving fresh catches grilled on the spot — prawns, squid, crab, and whole fish — at prices well below tourist-zone restaurants in Duong Dong. The chairs and sunbeds under palm-thatched umbrellas are typically free with a food or drink order.
The central and southern stretches of Bai Sao are quieter, with longer gaps between beach clubs and longer uninterrupted sections of sand. This is where couples and families tend to find their spot for the day. There is no significant nightlife — Bai Sao is solidly a daytime beach — but the calm evenings at local guesthouses and bungalows have their own appeal: distant lights of fishing boats, a warm breeze, and virtually no noise.
Bai Sao is also the closest major beach to the An Thoi cable car terminal, which connects Phu Quoc to the Hon Thom Nature Park via the world's longest non-stop gondola cable car (7.9 km). This makes Bai Sao an excellent base for day trips to the Southern Islands — island-hopping by speedboat from An Thoi port takes you to some of the best snorkelling reefs in the Gulf of Thailand, typically in 15–30 minutes.
